About Susanna Elliot

I began writing the Guardians of the World Gates series for a very special reader: my ten-year-old granddaughter. The book is dedicated to her, and when I let her read the first four chapters, she begged me to finish it. She later told me it was the best book she had ever read which might just be my favourite review of all time.

The front cover was designed by my eldest grandchild, who was studying illustration at university. When the book was published, my ten-year-old granddaughter proudly showed it to her teacher, who described it as “very exciting” and asked for six copies to add to the Key Stage 2 reading list. Moments like that reminded me exactly why these stories matter.

This is a portal fantasy series for readers who are searching for books with autistic characters – with autistic twins as the heroes.

At the heart of the series are Jay and Jill Warde; autistic twins who discover they are Guardians of the World Gates, ancient portals hidden deep in forests and forgotten places.

I wanted to write stories about ordinary children stepping into extraordinary roles – children who feel different, overwhelmed, or misunderstood, yet find that those very differences are their strength. Jay hates loud noises and crowded places. Jill can’t stand being touched and refuses to wear dresses. Together, with their Guardian Talents and a small circle of animal allies, they face mysteries that stretch back centuries.

These books are written for readers aged roughly 9–16, but they’re enjoyed by much wider ages too. They’re ideal for confident readers, reluctant readers, and autistic or neurodiverse children who want to see themselves reflected in exciting adventures. They also work beautifully as read-alouds for parents, teachers, and librarians looking for inclusive stories that spark imagination and conversation.

If you love magical forests, hidden worlds, family secrets, talking animals, and portal fantasy, and if you believe that being different can be powerful then you’re in the right place.

The Gates are opening.
The twins are the key.
And the adventure has only just begun.
